The quotation below is taken directly from p. 8 of the 2009, Ford-sponsored, WI
IronMan Athlete Information Guide, which can be downloaded from
<http://www.ironmanwisconsin.com/>

"When training, please bike and run on the shoulder without moving into the
traffic lane. Please be courteous and aware that the people sharing the roads
with you are people you will count on during race day to fulfill your physical
and emotional needs. Please ride single file, as biking side by side is
illegal."

For the record, I heartily agree with being courteous on the road. That said,
biking in the shoulder is only safe on a road without parked cars, where there
is a decently paved, marked shoulder without too much debris. A cyclist has a
right to, and needs to know that they can (and should) occupy the vehicle lane
when their personal safety makes this necessary.

Also, riding 2 abreast is legal in WI as long as traffic flow is not being
impeded (WI statute [346.80(3)(a)]). I understand that it is against IM race
rules to ride abreast or draft during the actual race, but the above quotation
is referring to training.

This may seem like nitpicking details, but I think it's important to stop
marginalizing cyclists- recreational or otherwise. And cyclists often get
railed on for not following the rules of the road. I would argue that knowing
the rules is the first step in being able to follow them.
