I was out in my car last night, driving past the newly painted bike lanes on University, and a question about the way we mark bike lanes occurred to me. I hope that some knowledgeable person on the list might have an answer. My apologies if this has already been discussed. Why do we paint the words "Bike Lane" (actually "Lane Bike") to mark the bike lanes instead of using a bicyclist silhouette? The words seemed virtually unreadable to me -- especially from my car in the next lane. This morning I was riding on Odana road and looked at the markings there. The words still seemed difficult to read until I was virtually on top of them. The silhouette seems as if it would be more easily and quickly understood.
