I have help lead 6th graders at Whitehorse Middle School across this intersection this week and the indicators for bicycle use do not exist, as I remember. There is a stop light button for pedestrian use but it is accessible at the cross walk. Which is why, I guess, the father was in the cross walk and not on the street. Also the intersection itself is kind of beat up. The northbound (east) side side of Dempsey need repair as the shoulder by the bar is graveled and there is a three inch jump from the sidewalk to the shoulder. There are a number of sign and light posts that add to visual clutter. Although what I'm proposing no way excuses the driver, but between the signs and the driver's car windshield pillar a bicycle was "lost" in the visual confusion. But more likely, the driver was looking left or ahead waiting for the traffic to clear before looking right while turning. Darryl

It is part of the bike route for the loop and is used by numerous people who bike for recreational purposes. This father, however, must have been taking his children to school. The recent extension of the Capital City bike PATH from Dempsey to Cottage Grove Road has been great for people like me who live east of the lake loop. It is well used. Someday, that path will lead all the way to the Glacial Drumlin Trail in the village of Cottage Grove. However, that extension does not accommodate the numerous bicyclists who are riding around Lake Monona for recreational purposes or, apparently, biking their children to St. Dennis (that is my guess in regards to this incident). It seems like this father was not on the road but in the crosswalk. He thought the crosswalk was more safe. I believe he would have been more visible on the street. When you are a parent towing children, it's hard to recognize as much. The most difficult aspect of this intersection is that once Dempsey is south of Cottage Grove Road, it lacks curb/gutter/sidewalk. Painting bike lanes on an old road like this is unfamiliar to me. However, the time has come.
