(Also please mark your calendars with a tentative date of Thursday, Nov 5 for the hearing/vote before the full County Board.) Please pass on this message to others that might be interested/supportive! Although a Regional Transit Authority is not strictly a bicycling issue, I hope many on this list will come out Monday to support forming an RTA in the Madison area. The County Board Chair has introduced legislation to form the RTA board, the first step in actually getting regional transit. This is only to form the board. Later there will be a referendum on whether to levy a 1/2 percent sale tax to fund regional transit of all kinds. The board has to be formed first, so that only the areas of the county that would be included in the RTA would vote on the referendum. The area to be included is the current boundaries of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, plus all of any towns that are only partially within the MPO boundary. This area is larger than the city of Madison, but smaller than Dane County. We are certain that the opponents will be out in force, so let's also be there to support better transportation options. Better transit options, covering more area, will give all of us more choices in transportation. Longer distances, crappy weather, bike-unfriendly destinations would be easier to overcome without a car. My feeling is than any transit in the Madison area will accommodate bikes as well, which makes a multi-modal trip a breeze.
