Because I have (very mild) asthma, and breathing cold air while biking
briskly is one of the triggers, I have a large collection of "neck gaiters"
that I use to cover my nose and mouth almost any time I go outside in winter
and plan to raise my heart rate even slightly.

Neck gaiters can be pulled up over your mouth/nose, and they stay there,
unlike scarves, but they can easily be pulled down at traffic lights, to
avoid foggy glasses, or if you get too warm.

I use synthetic neck gaiters, partly because they can be easily washed, and
partly because they dry quickly. Yes, they get wet, but I'm going to sweat,
cry, or drool on several clothing items while biking. Or my clothes are
going to get wet from snow or rain. Such is Wisconsin weather, and that's
why I buy quick-dry stuff.

Good luck.

(A nice variety of neck gaiters are available at Fontana, if you are looking
for a nearby retailer.)
