Bad hair day? Better bad hair than freezing cold. I use a lightweight balaclava, under a small worn out knit cap and a light knitted scarf. Oh and some camouflage gloves I bought at Fleet Farm for $4.99... they do better than all the high tech, high priced so-called winter biking gloves I've ever wasted money on.
I solve the problem of keeping track of stuff by just leaving it on 24/7 from
Dec til March. It's convenient if my wife needs pickles in the middle of the
night... I just leap up and I'm off, ready for the cold.

I find that a combination of headband with ear covers, a thin balaclava, and a
rain cover over a quick-adjustable helmet can keep the human head relatively
cozy down to -8 F. Can make for a bad-hair day, though...
Keeping track of those items, though, might be less convenient than finding a
cold weather helmet that does it all.
