Hans,
I have some suggestions. Maybe some of them will prove useful.
I would stay away from the heavy oil on your chain (Phil's tenacious is good
for internal hubs, etc., but tends to get gunky in cold temperatures and is too
heavy to get to where it needs to on a chain), and also stay away from spray
lubes (overspray is unavoidable and nasty). I recommend a light drip lube,
such as Pedros or Triflow. Use just enough to almost coat the chain. Drip it
onto the chain above the rear gear cluster as you are pedaling backwards- no
tools are necessary to get it to run into the pivot points where it is needed-
just a minute of pedaling backwards. Then meticulously wipe off ALL the lube
that you see. You will likely use up the entire surface of a fresh rag.
Really. You don't need ANY lube on the outside of the chain (that's a very
mild overstatement but since you can't actually wipe it ALL off it's a good
rule of thumb). Plus, even if the outside of the chain is rusty it doesn't
matter- it's only the inner contact points that you need to kee
p lubricated. If your chain runs smoothly and looks yucky, well that's winter
riding. Be sure to do your chain lubricating after your bike cleaning.
As far as cleaning your bike in winter- the best plan is find a spot indoors
with a drain (yours or a friend's basement). Otherwise you could use an old
shower curtain or tarp (and some newspaper around the edges to prevent leaks)
on the floor and then rinse that off in the bathtub or utility sink when you
are done.
