Now that there are wide shoulders on most of Hwy 14 west of Madison (not the whole way, mind you, but better than before), brave souls wishing for a direct, relatively flat route to the Wisc River may be riding Hwy 14. There are still more changes planned, however, especially within the communities that are located along the road.
Will the proposed improvements be better for those walking, biking, crossing, living on, or shopping near the road? You can help shape the future of this road by attending a meeting March 9. It's in almost all the way to Mazo, but some might find a way to get there. Or maybe the DOT can post the plans/proposals on line, so others can see them? (One of my pet peeves is that it is so hard to get the info on DOT plans/thoughts on a roadway unless you physically attend the meeting. Maybe if enough people email the project manager, they will make the info available.) A public information meeting will be held by the DOT at 6 p.m. March 9 at Wisconsin Heights High School, just east of Mazomanie on U.S. 14. A study by the DOT looks at the stretch of U.S. 14 from Wisconsin 78 east of Mazomanie to U.S. 12 in Middleton. The DOT wants to improve operations and safety in the corridor, with recommendations including realigning existing intersections to address safety issues, limiting the addition of new intersections with the highway and addressing existing driveway locations on the U.S. 14 corridor. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting, provide input and ask questions. Maps showing the proposed strategies and recommendations along U.S. 14 will be on display.
