The Natural Resources Board will be meeting Wednesday to consider a rifle deer hunt in mid-October. They have heard from lots of people that favor this to bring down the size of the deer herd. *They also need to hear from people that are concerned about the safety of non-hunters out in the often still-warm and sunny woods, and those people have not submitted comments. * The proposed hunt time is peak colors for many areas of the state, and I myself got caught unaware last fall in the Northern Kettle Morraine. (Wouldn't you know it, I didn't bring my neon-yellow biking shell on that trip.) Please forward comments to the Natural Resources Board via the address below. One of the items they will consider is the deer season structure for 2010. The current proposal they will be acting on includes two October gun deer seasons, an antlerless gun deer season in mid-December as well as a holiday gun deer season between Christmas and New Years. Some of the concerns that have been expressed in the past about the October and December hunts include - Mid October is a very popular time for outdoor enthusiasts and trail users. With peak fall colors occurring approximately Oct 15 and good weather for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and other outdoor recreational pursuits, thousands of outdoor enthusiasts take advantage of the fall weather to pursue their outdoor activities. Non-hunters are frequently not aware of hunting seasons. Significant efforts including press releases, numerous signs, and personal contacts, made to inform non-hunters of the hunting seasons and the need to wear bright colored clothing during gun deer seasons – have been largely unsuccessful. Because of the lack of knowledge about the October and Holiday hunting seasons (a higher percentage of non-hunters are aware of the November gun deer season) - large numbers of non-hunters use hunt-able areas during hunting seasons without appropriate colored clothing. Numerous non-hunters in an area being hunted for deer can interfere with the hunting experience and success of a gun deer hunter. Mid October is not the preferred time for a gun deer season for hunters (leaves on the trees reduce the visibility of game that they are hunting) or for wildlife managers (deer management would be more effective in early November). It is always important that the board hear from all user groups. Anyone wishing to comment on the proposed seasons should send written comments to the address listed below.
