If five feet for biking feels a little cramped during this demolition project,
detour a mere 200 meters south to the new Kendall Avenue Bike Boulevard, which
has now been granted permanent status!

The Bike Boulevard is spacious, tree-lined, and shared with cyclists by only
the most courteous motorists. Protect your skin and bike paint from damage by
the merciless summer sun on the Campus Drive path by cruising along a
residential boulevard shaded by lovingly-tended adolescent ash and Norway maple
(the silver maples are pretty much history...)!

A very recent notice in the neighborhood states that the permanent traffic
excluder at Franklin will be placed sometime in August, replacing the temporary
barrels. Other features should follow.

Most comments on the experiment were reported to be supportive, and diverted
east-bound traffic has not appeared to create serious problems on other,
parallel streets. A stop sign will be placed on Franklin (which has for a long
time been the domain of somewhat excessive-speed commute traffic) to help
improve safe passage for not only bikes and pedestrians, but also west-bound
motorists.

A project of this sort was initially proposed in the Regent Neighborhood
Association traffic plan (by me and others) nearly 20 years ago, and it is
wonderful to see it finally becoming a reality.

I certainly want to thank everyone who has worked for and advocated for this
bike, pedestrian and neighborhood-friendly project over that time - members of
the RNA transportation committee and its current chair, past and present alders
Robbie Webber and Shiva Bidar-Silaf (sp?), the city TE supervisors and staff
who were courageous enough to give this a try, and everyone who sent positive
or other constructive comments.

We hope this route will continue to be enjoyed by thousands of cyclists in
safety and health for many, many decades, and that it will gradually be
extended westward!

Subject: [Bikies] Campus Dr. Path Impact [but Univ Ave contraflow lane now open]

Sorry for posting twice, but you can see all the closures around campus here:
http://www2.fpm.wisc.edu/trans/files/StreetClosuresDetours.pdf

The good news - I saw the city's contractor opening up the eastbound contraflow
lane on University Ave yesterday, I believe the length of it from Bassett
westward.

Subject: Campus Dr. Path Impact

Forest Products Laboratory will be demolishing a building adjacent to the
Campus Dr path near Highland Ave starting the middle of next week. About half
of the width of the path will be fenced off for approx 100' since the building
is right up against the shoulder, but the half (or more) of the path is
expected to be open to travel. Please exercise caution when traveling through
the area.
