Kristy: I'm not planning on removing any bicycles, and I don't think anyone else at UW intends to do that (no one else is supposed to impound bikes at UW other than me anyway, except UWPD when it's an urgent health and safety issue, or Housing to cull abandoned bikes from their racks). Nor is the city of Madison or any other jurisdication, to my knowledge, planning to remove bikes. But of course I could be wrong. It's not like the Secret Service has consulted me on any of it. I'm getting all my information from people much higher up the chain of command, and I wasn't present for the discussion.
Patrick: it's not a question of generosity, it's a question of resources. I'm throwing all the time and resources at the problem that I've got. Unfortunately, my time and resources are fairly limited, since my staff consists of me and the student LTE who is here for 3 hours today. I will be putting notices on as many bike racks in the area as I can, but there are many bike racks on private property (the Pres House, the Catholic Student Center), and in the city of Madison Right of Way (northern terminus of Fitch Ct), as well as many informal places bicycles lock to (such as street signs and light poles), and I will not likely be able to effectively notice every conceivable location that will be affected. I suggest that you don't park a bike anywhere in the area if you want to be able to retrieve it during the day on Tuesday September 28, and please help me to spread the word.
