Eric, the bus doesn't go 110 mph, it can't fly past traffic and it doesn't work very well when it's icy. It's less comfortable and it's harder to use your time on it productively.
How much will a ticket cost? From the WisDOT website: "It's too early to provide an exact ticket cost for each of the various station stops between Chicago and Madison. In its application for federal funds, the state needed to estimate the potential cost of a ticket between Milwaukee and Madison. For these planning purposes, the ticket cost was estimated in a range between $22 and $33 dollars for a one-way ticket. It's expected the final cost will be on the low end of the estimated range." For $4.50 more, I'll take the train. Granted, the speed entering Madison and leaving Milwaukee won't be 110 mph, but I think we can expect the trip to take significantly less time than the 1 hour 50 minutes the bus takes to cover the 80 miles between Madison and Milwaukee. The project makes a lot more sense when you see it as a first stage toward high speed rail between Chicago/Milwaukee and the Twin Cities. Many who would at this time fly, would opt for the train since it delivers downtown. We may also wish to remember that Republican Governor Tommy Thompson helped initiate this whole project in 1993. Cancellation throws away a whole lot of effort.
