Great video. Something I used to fight internally at times in WisDOT. I got some converts.
http://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2010/12/7/conversation-with-an-engineer-street- project.html There is some similarity on the East Wash Project (Thierer to East Springs) which is having a Public Information Meeting tonight at the WisDOT district office. The current lanes are 12 feet. The city wants them reduced to 10 feet except for the lane next to the proposed bike lane which would be reduced to 11 feet. WisDOT is OK with that. But... an indvidual (engineer) at FHWA won't accept 10 foot lanes, even though the rest of east Wash was rebuilt with 10 foot lanes. They are not safe. FHWA will reluctantly accept 11 foot lanes - they still prefer 12 foot. Here's a kicker. The bikes lane will be barely 5-1/2 feet because of the 11 foot mandate. The bike lanes leading up to Thierer are 6 feet. So WisDOT and City engineers want 10 feet, but FHWA engineer (with really no practical field experience, but controlling the $$) mandates 11 feet. And bike lanes are not to the standard they should be.
