As the alder whose district included Picnic Point in 2005, when this was
last discussed, I gave these reasons why allowing bikes to continue to use
the main path was in the interest of the community. To me, the reasons below
are in descending order or importance and validity.

1. Families can more easily carry kids, picnic supplies, and sundry items by
bike than by foot. The path is very popular with families from Eagle
Heights, and it's a long way to walk with a small child, but a pretty easy
ride with a trailer or tag-a-long. I personally appreciate the ability to
carry food and cooking supplies out to the fire ring when friends have an
evening gathering.

2. Many people stop by picnic point on their way home from work or class. It
is easier to carry your pannier with you on the bike, and I certainly
wouldn't want to leave anything of value ON the bike if I left it at the
entrance.

3. An easily resolved matter is that there are no decent racks at the
entrance, so it's near impossible to leave your bike there, even if you
wanted to.

In 2005, I suggested rules for bicyclists be posted at the entrance, and
they were, but they are off to the side instead of right in front of your
face as you enter. Also, of course, there will always be people who are rude
and don't follow the rules, even if they see them. Despite what I think is a
common good in allowing bicyclists to continue to carefully and
considerately use the trail, there may simply be too many jerks for that to
happen.
