Tonight we had a great turnout of bicycle users, and some concerned Fitchburg residents who don't bike, for the Fitchburg Bicycle Summit.

Participants introduced themselves, and why they biked (or didn't). Consultant Mike Lydon, of the Street Plans Collaborative (New York), explained Fitchburg's traditional neighborhood development ordinance, based on the open source SmartCode, and how it can be extended to provide more guidance on bicycle thoroughfares, parking, and safety and convenience measures. We were then asked for our preferences on pictures of a number of bicycle facilities. Finally, small groups worked on maps of Fitchburg to highlight their favorite features of the bicycle network, and trouble spots that need improvement.

Mike and partner Tony Garcia will be working on proposals for bicycle updates to Fitchburg's zoning code over the next few weeks. After feedback from the public, a final draft will be referred to the Plan Commission and Transportation and Transit Commission for recommendations. The Common Council will take action later this summer. The Street Plans principals will also provide specific advice on an ordinance to permit cycling on sidewalks in Fitchburg under certain conditions, improvements to the Badger State Trail Crossing of McKee Road, and updates to Fitchburg's Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan.

Questions about this process and suggestions about Fitchburg's bicycle facilities and regulations may be sent to Ahna Bizjak (tranportation engineer), Susan Sloper (community planner), or me (Council representative to the Transportation and Transit Commission). Those who would like to be informed of future draft documents or meetings on this topic may also contact Susan to get on a mailing list. You may also contact me to be added to a list of Fitchburg bicycle users.

Thanks to all who provided input, especially bicycle advocates and professionals from around the area who are contributing to Fitchburg's progress to become a more bicycle-friendly community!
