Hello Bikies, I thought I would introduce myself with this, my first post to the Bikies Listserv. My name is Dave Schlabowske, and I am the new Communications Director for the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin. I live in Milwaukee and work out of that office, but I will be traveling to Madison and around the rest of the state as part of my new job. Some of you may know me as I was the first Milwaukee based full time employee for the Bike Fed when I was hired 11 years ago. For 5 years after that I worked for the Bike Fed as their Milwaukee Program Manger until I was lured away from the high pay of the non-profit world by the excitement of bureaucracy to be the first Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for the City of Milwaukee DPW. I guess I could only take so much excitement, because the Bike Fed hired me back three weeks ago.
As far as communications on this listserv goes, I want to respect your Dane County focus and will mostly just lurk. I do write a daily blog called Over the Bars in Wisconsin <http://overthebarsinmilwaukee.wordpress.com/> for the Bike Fed, and as a courtesy to a few other Milwaukee area listservs, I send an email with the link each time I publish, even if the post is not about Milwaukee specifically. I am happy to do the same here if Bikies members want and the rules allow, but if not, I will only mention a post if it has a Dane County connection. Please let me know and I will abide by your wishes and listserv rules. I would also like to ask people to let me know when important or just plain cool things are going on in the Madison area that they feel I should share on the blog. I enjoy sharing information about fun, smaller underground rides like alley cats, critical mass, pub crawls, etc. And it is even better if you want to write it up. If you are a writer and/or photographer who does something cool and wants to share it, feel free to contact me. I love to publish guest posts on the blog. I am also willing to report on important infrastructure and safety issues of special concern. I won't promise to write about every suggestion I get or publish every panda shot people email me, but without your tips, I can't know what is going in everywhere. I only have a weeks in the new job so far, but over time I hope to grow a strong network of people across the state who will keep me informed and help me tell the great story that is bicycling in Wisconsin. For today though, I reported on my first experience using the B-cycle system in Madison. http://overthebarsinmilwaukee.wordpress.com/2011/07/26/b-cycle-madison/ Via the comment section on the blog, I would love to hear from Madison locals what their impressions and experiences have been with the system. And please do let me know if you want me to toss up the link to the daily post on the Bikies list. If the rules don't allow for that, it is easy enough for interested readers to subscribe to the blog via email or RSS on their blog readers. Yours in cycling, -- Dave Schlabowske Dir. of Communications Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin 414-271-9685 www.bfw.org
