I haven't gotten a chance to read Dave's post, so forgive me if I am repeating what he said.
(Everything below is in the official crash statistics for the US over years. I just don't have time to find the link.) Cycling at night IS more dangerous than biking during the day, but so is driving, walking, boating, and probably flying. There is simply no way around the fact that human eyesight is not as good at night. whether it's hitting a pothole or animal, or being hit by a driver, there's just a better chance of crashing. Cycling at night, on a rural, 2-lane road is one of the only times where being hit from behind is a significant crash type. This is the type of crash that novices fear, but it is pretty rare, except under those conditions. A contributing factor that has been found in nighttime, rural crashes is that often one or both people involved in the crash had been drinking. Especially in Wisconsin, this is not surprising. Being hit from behind is rare, but it is a very dangerous crash type, and the most likely crash type to be fatal. In part this is due to the fact that, because these crashes often happen on rural roads, the driver is likely to be going at highway speeds. Robbie Webber
