They started going up last fall. Back then, a person at the city told me that
Madison plans to convert old parking meters into bike hitching posts as time
progresses. I used to know more details, but they were all on my computer at
the
Bike Fed, and I do not have a photographic memory. I know I was a little
concerned about how easily they could be unscrewed by someone who has the right
type of wrench/screwdriver (the bolts have asterisk-shaped depressions in their
heads, rather than the more common flathead, phillips or alan depressions), but
if you only lock junkers to them you are probably okay. I wouldn't put my nice
road bike on one. But they are pretty awesome for convenient parking during
errands.

Subject: [Bikies] Is this a new Bike Parking tool?

I'm sorry but I do not have a picture of this thing I saw. I don't carry
a
cell phone and the digital camera I had, well, I actually was dropping it
at BDC Camera on Johnson when I saw it...

I was parking my bike in front of the quirky used clothing store next to
BDC
when I spied this metal ring, actually laser cut with the word 'Madison'
and
an outline of a bike, bolted onto the parking meter (or was it a parking
sign??). The ring appeared to be a bike parking spot where I could lock my
wheel too. Sweet! I scanned the street for more of them, even scanned
Johnson as I biked off, but saw no more.

Is this a new initiative? Or is it an anomaly, perhaps installed by the
business? Either way, this seems like a great and relatively inexpensive
solution to bike parking. CAn anyone at the city answer this?

thanks
Mark
