Chuck, please repost my answer to bikies as I no longer have an account. Steve: We are not eliminating carsharing on the UW campus. Just going through an unfortunately timed transition. Community Car's contract with the university expired a few years ago and they have been in a contract extension holding pattern while the RFP process for the contract went through all of the bureaucratic channels. We are required by the state to rebid the service every five years. I believe Community Car's original contract was for 2003-2008. Community Car and four other candidates submitted applications to the RFP process. In the end, Zipcar came out on top. We were hoping to have the new vendor in place no later than July 1st, but it just has not been possible. An award has been made to Zipcar, but we are still finalizing the contract with them. Once that is done, Zipcars will be delivered within four weeks (perhaps sooner). So there will be a short gap in our carsharing availablility on campus despite our best efforts to prevent that. We do plan to offer very appealing deals for existing Community Car members to also join Zipcar, so that it won't present a barrier to using both companies if people so choose. Updates on the carsharing transition will be posted at http://www.transportation.wisc.edu/resources/carsharing.aspx Transportation Services remains committed to carsharing and we have very high hopes for the new Zipcar era. Thanks for your patience and continued support of alternatives to driving (non-shared vehicles) alone to campus. -Dar Darwin "Dar" Ward Commuter Solutions Manager University of Wisconsin Transportation Services 610 Walnut St, Rm 124 WARF Madison, WI 53726 PH 608-263-2076 FX 608-265-3424 [email protected] www.transportation.wisc.edu -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Steve Goldstein Sent: Friday, September 09, 2011 10:32 AM To: Bikies Subject: [Bikies] [Fwd: Community Car - September Newsletter] In the current Community Car newsletter, they report that they no longer have any cars on campus. I imagine that's a result of some financial decisions. Does anybody (Chuck?) know the details? Did Community Car previously get a "subsidy" in the form of parking spaces that has been cut?
