A 26-year old bicyclist was peddling westbound on W. Gorham St. when she came upon two suspects kicking a downed man in the head. She observed five to six blows before confronting the thugs, telling them to stop the attack. One initially made a pushing motion towards her, but he and his associate did end the assault. They fled, but based on good descriptions given by witnesses, officers found them near University Ave. and Lake St. Both claimed they had acted in self-defense, that the victim had swung at them first. They were both arrested on the tentative charge listed above. The victim said he had been out socializing with friends, and was walking alone. He does not remember the battery. His iPhone was taken during the assault, and recovered from one of the suspects. The victim was transported to a hospital and treated for head injuries that were not serious. The Madison Police Department would like to publically thank the bicyclist for intervening. Her actions likely prevented the victim from suffering more significant injuries.
