Regarding passports: They are a terrific piece of ID, in fact too good. I
would never use a passport as a drinking ID, and if one of my kids was carrying
his passport around in bars I'd probably confiscate it.
This calls for further expansion of the free (if you know enough to ask for it)
state ID program.

Subject: [Bikies] Non-driver's - you are no longer welcome in some Madison
bars

The Wisc State Journal carries a story that some downtown bars will not allow
anyone in that does not have a valid driver's license or passport - state
issued ID is not enough.
http://host.madison.com/news/local/article_b14ce1e0-f080-11e0-926b-001cc4c002e0.html

So.... if you don't drive?
The article focuses on the possibly racial impacts, since there is a
significant disparity along racial lines between those with driver's licenses
and those without, but as Brenda Konkel points out, some people with
disabilities also do not have a driver's license, and may not be able to get
one. And people from large cities - especially those moving to a small city for
the first time, like college students - may not have a driver's license. Of
course, some people just don't feel a need for a driver's license, even those
living in Madison. Can you imagine?

And as I point out in the comments section, carrying a passport is a pain. It
doesn't fit in your wallet or back pocket neatly, and that's important in a
crowded downtown bar!
