It would be very helpful if we could get a schedule for the completion of
Post Road from Fitchburg. My most recent contacts indicated "maybe in the
next 5-years....maybe". I think that more than 10 years is the limit of
anyone's patience, and much longer than that of Alder Bruer. This
neighborhood needs additional access. At this time, it is effectively
Madison's largest cul de sac.

The Perry Street Overpass concept may prove short sighted. Given the
potential for re-development on both the north and south side of the
Beltline Highway, a full mode underpass should also be evaluated.

Regardless, it would be very helpful if Fitchburg would jointly finance this
bridge/underpass with the City of Madison. Money talks, everything else
goes over the Beltline/Fish Hatchery Bridge. And, yes, I have suggested
this option to Fitchburg staff some months ago.

I shall await with interest the approval of the 2011 City of Fitchburg
budget, and I am thankful for the support of Alder Arnold for both the Post
Road project and, hopefully, the bridge/underpass beneath the Beltline @
Perry Street.

Fitchburg's Plan Commission tonight recommended approval of an offer to purchase the second house in the way of connecting Post Road to the City of Madison east of Fish Hatchery Road. Negotiations continue with the owner, but the extension will be built with or without the house. (In case we cannot purchase the house, there is a contingency plan for two-way traffic north of the center line of the road as a temporary measure.) Council approval will be up next. Then the purchase can be made as soon as there is agreement on the price with the owner. (Note that sometime in the historical past, Fitchburg's leaders made a decision to not acquire the needed property by condemnation, a decision that has caused a multi-year delay in this project.)

The last piece that's required is for Fiduciary, the owner of Valley View Apts. and much of the vacant land needed for the road, to pull the trigger and begin developing the vacant land, proposed for more multi-family housing. They will then need to dedicate the needed land for the road right-of-way, and construction can begin.

I am also cool with a "complete street" bridge or underpass for Perry St. Limited access highways tear communities asunder, and every effort must be made to stitch them back together!
