as they note, the bike paths got their impetus from the '70s oil crises. in fact, we got the message temporarily--massive funding for research on renewables.. jimmy carter told us to put on a sweater and put solar panels on the white house, and then ronald reagan was elected. the solar panels came down and we indulged in a 30-year-plus orgy of fossil fuel waste, and we still don't seem to get it. almost everyone who knows better still drives . . . .
