As bicyclists you know that transit is a great complement to bicycling. And transit users make our communities safer for bicyclists too. 30 people on one bus, or several hundred on a train - means fewer motor vehicles on our streets and roads.
Thus I would urge you to please join us for the annual Public Transportation Day this coming Tuesday. In addition to meeting with elected officials and the Wisconsin Secretary of Transportation there will be meetings of the Statewide Transit Coalition and the newly-formed "All Aboard Wisconsin" (which can raise money, lobby, and endorse candidates). Full agenda below. Note that there is a modest charge for lunch but no other fees. With the changes going on in state government this year (as well as the newly elected Dane County Board) we have new opportunities to advance transit again. A Dane County Regional Transit Authority, for example! But we need YOUR help. If you would like to be added to the mailing list for the Statewide Transit Coalition please contact Gary Goyke: [email protected] If you want to join or keep abreast of All Aboard Wisconsin please contact Mike McCoy: [email protected] Barb, would you please consider distributing this to your OAP list? Public Transportation Day. State Capitol. All times confirmed. I am sending this note to several of you intending to give you as much advance notice as possible. We chose this particular date as a "Public Transportation Day" several months ago...but I want you to know it is confirmed and we are getting ready to go. Here are many of the schedule details. The "Statewide Transit Coalition" was postponed on March 19th due to a number of schedule conflicts. That meeting will take place on Tuesday April 10th as well. The new organization "All Aboard Wisconsin" will also meet at the end of the day. We will have an Awards Ceremony and visit legislative offices.....all of this is a big undertaking. Your help is needed. Your help in getting the word out is needed. Your attendance is appreciated. You will shortly understand why. Tuesday April 10th 2012 Public Transportation Day Room 417 N. State Capitol 8:30 a.m. The big hearing room will be locked until this time. We will open at 8:30 a.m. Capitol security prefers this. Please do not come much earlier than that time. I would plan on providing 50 copies for this session if you are doing a handout. Most of you have attended one of these sessions over the past 18 months. We have some very pertinent updates and will talk about our request to the Secretary, the upcoming meetings in Appleton and Eau Claire by the Commission, 13.10 requests, the brokerage report and much more. Notice. We will not be allowed to have catered coffee or rolls in the room.....so bring your personal thermos or stop at a nearby coffee shot to get your brew or juice. We will have lunch in the room at 12:15 a.m. and that will be delivered. All lunches will be $8 per person. You will pay on the day of the event. Checks can be made out to WURTA. Receipts will be available. There are NO other registration fees or costs. We are doing everything possible to keep your costs down to the bare minimums. 10:30 a.m. -10:50 a.m. Break. We will not leave the room for lunch but will continue brining up critical issues, review the issues packets (we hope to distribute about 90 packets yet that day) We will not need to visit every office because of retirements or recalls. 2:00 p.m. - 2: 30 p.m. Awards Ceremony/Press Conference. Nancy is the Executive Director of the Transit Mutual Insurance Company of Wisconsin. She will be retiring soon after this meeting. We want to acknowledge her excellent work. Not all of you know much about TMI but you will appreciate the job they do. 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. When we all leave the room after the award presentations, All Aboard Wisconsin will take the space for their important business meeting. We have all been given an invite to attend the "roll out reception" for all of the State Senate candidates standing for election in the May 8th primaries and then in the June 5th general elections. This is optional but will be encouraged. Republican, Democratic and Independent candidates will be available for your questions and to meet and greet. (Separate locations of course!) Again this is optional and is not part of the formal program for the day. Our use of the public space in the Capitol building is sponsored by State Representative Jerry Petrowski (R-Weston) who is Chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee and State Senator Jon Erpenbach (D- Middleton) a member of the Senate Committee on Transportation. I have asked for assistance from the Chair of our WURTA Marketing Committee to help put all the pieces together in a little better format....but this should give you a working concept for the day and help with your planning purposes. I can't believe it is March 31st...the session has just adjourned....but the pace is still incredible. All the recalls and elections will make for a very fascinating April, May and June!!! Best to everyone. Please cut and paste this memo....and start the fine art of member notification. Gary Gary R. Goyke
