No doubt there are economic roots. Apparently the auto industry believes
that there is a cultural shift, too. See this article from the New York

My personal experience with my kids is that they just don't see a car as
freedom in the same way that my generation did. Daughter, now 21, made
half-hearted attempts to get trained up, but her permit expired before she
got around to taking a driving test, not that she would have been ready. My
17 year-old son has shown *no* interest. It's more like getting wisdom
teeth removed- probably have to happen, but what's the hurry?
