I received the following from Karl Franzen, MMSD's Safe Routes to School
Coordinator. I just checked Saris' facebook page for the contest and MMSD is
in third place. Please add your vote and help them get better bicycle paring
at their administrative offices and set an example for the district. As a
frequent visitor to MMSD's admin bldg, I can vouch for the need for better
bicycle parking there. Here is the blurb from the facebook page on MMSD's entry
Madison Metropolitan School District - Doyle Administration Building
Madison Metropolitan School District employee and visitor bicycle parking at
the Doyle Administration Building is almost literally "in the dumps"! We need
help supporting and encouraging our staff to bike commute and model for our
students and for the Doyle Administration Building to be a community welcoming
resource. MMSD is committed to upgrading its school facilities with Safe Routes
to School grants, but do not have that money for this building that houses no
students. Our basic facility maintenance and infrastructure budget needs
millions of dollars more for roofs and furnaces, so there are significant
barriers to the rise of bike facilities up the priority list. However, if we
can support our staff that bike to work and encourage the practice across the
district in line with our student encouragement efforts, we will experience
long-term benefits. The most used location at the Doyle Administration
Building, tucked by a back entry and next to the garbage and recycling
dumpsters, is one of the couple rusty fence style racks on site, although it is
only used as designed when the railing behind it is full. A Saris bike corral
would be an amazing improvement!
Karl Franzen

Vote online to choose two winners

We received over SEVENTY entries into our first Saris Bike Corral Contest,
clearly demonstrating the need for more access to bike parking.

Our goal was to choose three entries that showed great demand and community
support for increased bike parking in their community, but it was too difficult
for us to choose three so instead we narrowed it down to the top eight.
Instead of giving away one Bike Corral we are going to give away TWO! Please
help us choose our winners.

Voting begins today and ends Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. CST. The
winners will be announced at noon on Thursday, May 31.
