All:

I sent this on Friday, but then realized my new email address isn't
registered with Bikies, so it didn't go through. Some of what I have below
has since been mentioned by others...

Interesting discussion on closing some of the crossings on the Cap City.
Lately I have been going out of my way to avoid the CC precisely because of
the frequent crossings. I now generally ride Willy from Blair to the Yahara
- the new pavement is awesome, but riding in the door zone makes me rather
nervous; I also tend to avoid Willy when both traffic lanes are open in the
direction I am going.

I have a few general thoughts on the topic:

- Usually, closing streets is a bad idea - they provide redundancy in the
transportation network, even if they don't typically receive much use. In
transportation planning circles, it is common to hear people lamenting
street closures that happened years before that have now limited options.
While biking around the Monroe neighborhood, I often wish there were more
crossings of the path area because I find myself having to go out of my way
to get from point A to point B.

- That said, there are other options for these crossings. A great option
for the Cap City would be raised crosswalks at many/all of the crossings
with yield signs on the streets. Think something like this:

.
This is essentially a speed table for the street. This would maintain a
level surface for the path, slow traffic on the streets, make clear who has
the right-of-way, and still allow motor vehicle access to the neighborhood.

- The street closure discussion between the city and the RR for Blount,
Brearly & Livingston is a different than this discussion about Jackson,
Ohio & Corry because of the presence of active rail. The RR's proposal is
for a *full* closure of those streets, which would also eliminate bike and
pedestrian crossings with fencing. It is my understanding that while the
city opposes any closings, they particularly oppose ones that eliminate all
access. Rightfully so.
