If anyone would like to help some incoming UW students learn a bit about
biking in Madison, here's a great chance. *On Labor Day, Sept 3, 11 am - 1
PM there will be a SE Area Block Party, that is an event at the SE Dorm,
near the Kohl Center*. Various student and University groups will be there
to help students get oriented, learn about resources, etc.

The UWPD will be there with safety information, including some information
about bicycling and mopeds*, and UW Transportation Services will also be
there with information about transportation in the campus area in general.
City of Madison will be registering bikes, and will likely have maps,
handouts, etc. BUT, no one is covering one topic that students really need
to know about: How to securely lock your bike.

Bike Fed does not have a staff person available, and I'll be out of town,
but Martha Laugen, the Madison Bike Ambassador would be love to have a
volunteer or two (or more?) set up a table with information and just be
available to answer questions. They have all the supplies, and UWPD will be
glad to get you a table.

So if you ever said, "Someone should tell the UW students _______" or if
you have shaken you head about the less-than-securely locked bikes you've
seen around campus, here's your chance to help out. Teach them not to ride
the wrong way on the street! Explain that it's bright to be lit (with a
bike light at night.) And help the newbies adjust to a place where locking
your front wheel only results in the erst of the bike disappearing thanks
to quick release hubs.

Martha can be reached at: [email protected] or 251-4456.

Thanks to any kind soul that is willing to educate the incoming new
bicyclists!
