Thanks, Rick. I had indeed heard this, but no unlocked cars or lost/stolen
openers on our part. I think this was simply my family neglecting to close the
garage door. I was out of town -- as a native of NYC, I tend to close and lock
everything. ;-)
Thanks again to everyone for their advice. I'll try to post a
description/photo tonight, just on the off chance someone notices it
somewhere...

Dipesh - and everyone - Just making sure you are aware of the garage
break-ins that have been occurring on the West/SW side. Thieves have
been getting into unlocked cars and using the garage door openers to
access garages. I believe the West side police issued an alert regarding
this sometime in August.
