I hear that! I say, choose your life. I personally work outside, so I get
sensory joy during my work day. Some days when I don't feel like biking the
same ol' 7 miles to work, I can tell myself, "well, Joy Cardin will get me
there today". I certainly don't' use headphones everyday! That would be boring
too.
I think a lot of you would be surprised, that with some careful observation of
the person you are approaching, it's pretty clear if they are going to change
direction or not. You could save those thumb muscles and not annoy the person
in front of you with 50 bell rings. I think it would be more dangerous if I
had to slow down, turn around and say, "okay, I heard your bell rings. You may
now safely pass and I will stay in my lane." Just assume the person hears you
and proceed carefully.
Just one opinion. But it's interesting and sad to know there is so much anger
on the bike path.

What I don't understand is why we need to fill every available second with some
media stimulus?
Although traffic noise is out there, I take advantage of my time
commuting on my bike to absorb the world and listen to my
thoughts.
sometimes that includes thoughts that are sparked by odd things I
see (like motorists and peds doing dumb but entertaining things).
Often by things like shore birds, light, temperature, frost on the
trees, etc.
Our brains need more 'down' time, and biking is perfect for that.
I measure response using my bell.
Rung 20 yards back
Rung 10 yards back
Rung 5 yards back
Rung immediately behind the running/walking/biking person wearing
head phones/ear buds
and no response. That is a dangerous situation.
