Chad

Aloha,
Several of us interested in understanding European best practices re bicycling
and
transportation (Chad Taniguchi, Patricia Johnson, and possibly Jeff Mikulina)
are organizing
a short tour of bike friendly facilities in Copenhagen, Amsterdam (Utrecht),
Zurich
(Winterthur) followed by the Velo-City Bike Conference in Vienna
http://www.velo-
city2013.com/ (early bird registration $670 does not include food/lodging by
March 15). We
start in Copenhagen on May 30 and spend 4 days in each city. This is not a
for-profit tour.
We are all on our own, but spending the time together because we have similar
interests.
Everyone pays their own expenses, and we contribute to having Mike Ronkin plan
and guide
us for 8 days from Amsterdam to Zurich. The first 4 days in Copenhagen and the
last 4 days
in Vienna are on our own (we will make arrangements for locals to talk with us).

>From Michael Ronkin http://www.michaelronkin.com/ : join uson a tour of
>selected European
cities that have figured out how to do urban transport right: Copenhagen,
Amsterdam
(Utrecht), Winterthur, and Zurich. Michael is a European native who has worked
most of his
transportation career in the US, including Portland, Hawaii, and many other US
cities. He will
be able to guide us through these great places with an eye not only on
infrastructure, but also
on culture: why did these places make decisions so different from ours in the
US, even when
they faced similar challenges such as too much traffic and too many crashes? We
will bike,
walk, take transit, linger, and appreciate how a sensible approach to mobility
helps foster
what humans need most: social interactions with other people.

Although we will bike for the experience, this is not a bicycle riding tour.
The group is limited
to 10 members. Please let me know asap if you are interested. You will want to
register for
Velo-City by March 15 for the early bird rate. $820 after March 15.

Approximate plane fare from Honolulu to Copenhagen and Vienna to Honolulu:
$2,000
Copenhagen to Amsterdam by plane $100
Amsterdam (Utrecht) to Zurich (Winterthur) by train $350
Winterthur to Vienna by train ($200)

Lodging: range daily from $50 (hostel) to $150 (hotel). We will stay close by.
The default
accomodation now is hostel, but there will be choices. $800 - $2400 total.

Food: $50-$100 per day, minimum. $800-$1600 total.

Guide (Michael Ronkin): Approximately $600 per person with 10 people, $1200 per
person
with 5 people.

Total costs from Honolulu: approximate range $5,520- $8,670
