One of the big questions is likely to be whether/how to accommodate bicyclists on these two blocks. While I am sending this out to the Bikies list, I am not assuming everyone agrees that allowing bicyclists to ride between Lake St and Park St is a priority. However, I think we all can agree that this is an important non-motorized corridor and public space. At the moment, bicyclists are allowed to ride on East Campus Mall - that is from Dayton to State St. East Campus Mall will be extended all the way to Lake Mendota when the parking lot next to Memorial Union goes away and becomes Alumni Park. I'm not entirely sure what the plan is for the piece between State St (still legally a city street) and Langdon. Right now, bicyclists cannot ride between Lake St and Park St on State St. Many do, because trying to get between, say Humanities and the post office can involve one or more of the following: going way out of the way for a two-block trip, crossing University Ave twice (if one is headed west and doesn't want to use Landgon for some reason), dismounting and walking the two blocks. There are quite a few people that find the University Ave bike lanes sort of intimidating, so when they come to the north end of East Campus Mall at University Ave, many would prefer to continue north and access various destinations in the campus, Langdon area, or State St without needing to negotiate that barrier. The 700-800 block of no-bike-riding is a barrier to those destiantions. Anyway, here's the public notice of the meeting. The focus of the design is to create a special place at the intersection of two recently constructed iconic Madison corridors, State Street and East Campus Mall. The design will honor the history of the location while balancing the wide array of users and activities that occur here. The City of Madison plans to reconstruct the State Street portion of the project beginning in 2014. The University of Wisconsin will use preliminary plans to plan and budget for reconstructing Library Mall. A public informational and stakeholder input meeting will be held on April 23, 2013 from 7 pm to 9 pm in the Class of 1924 Reception Room on the 4th floor of the Memorial Union (next to the Great Hall). The meeting will begin promptly at 7 pm with a short presentation outlining the history of the space, current and future development planned around the space, and the role of stakeholder input in the process the design team will use to design the space. The blocks currently exist as a pedestrian mall.
