Here is an article that covers many of the issues I have considered over
the years. Car drivers will be very vocal if they can't park somewhere, and
shop owners obsess over losing customers because of insufficient [car]
parking.

And a couple of comments give suggestions how to fix the problem - really
good ones, not all snark. They estimate that one car parking spot will fit
14 bikes in a corral. I think that might be a bit high, but even 10
bikes/car spot would solve a lot of problems. And getting long-term bike
parkers such as employees and residents to park in secure off-street spots
would really help free up spots on the street for customers of shops,
restaurants, and bars. Just like what parking meters do - make sure there
is turnover and more convenient spots for those quick stops.
