If you bike on a state trail (in our area, Capital City. Badger State, Military Ridge, Glacial Drumlin) between the hours of 11 pm and 6 am, you become a de facto criminal, subject to a $175 fine that can be imposed at whim by the DNR. Bet you didn't know this. Even some people in DNR don't either. It is a carry-over from the days when trails were considered nothing more than "a ride in the park" Since then our trails have become important transportation corridors, allowing people to, for example, commute to and from work. We are even talking about creating a trails system for bikes similar to the Interstate for cars. Numbered routes, easy to follow. Times have changed, but DNR has not, The Wisconsin Nonmotorized Recreation and Transportation Trails Council, the Bike Fed, and the Friends of Badger State Trail (where an "illegal" night-time event was recently held) are all on record supporting repeal of this archaic concept of bicycling.
