I wrote an article for our most recent newsletter about the Bixi financial problems. (Newsletter will be out tomorrow, but article is already up.) If you really want to dig into what other news is saying, there are links to more articles in my story. http://www.ssti.us/2014/01/bixi-bankruptcy-a-blow-to-bike-sharing-but-cities-vow-no-disruption/
There has been a lot of press about Bixi because they provided the bikes to London, Melbourne, Toronto, Chicago, NYC, and DC, in addition to many other large and medium-sized cities in North America. They definitely got most of the largest systems in the English-speaking world (and Montreal). Except for the Globe and Mail article Scott just sent, I don't think I found one other major media mention that points out that Bixi is not the only company providing bikeshare bikes. In writing the article I also found out all sorts of info about the financial structure and history of the company and some of the cities that have withheld payment because of software problems. Apparently, even their partner Alta Bikeshare is suing them because of software glitches and delays. It sounds like a whole cascade of events, many brought about by business disputes - both between Bixi and the original software company and then between various cities and Bixi.
