A foundation created to provide a perpetual source of funding for bicycle programs and projects in the Dane County area has developed a plan in secret to disband and give away the funds, perhaps in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, it holds in its coffers to unknown recipients. The action by the board of the Dane County Bicycle Association is rumored to be scheduled for a meeting at an undisclosed time and secret location on Saturday, March 8. Efforts to reach the foundation's registered agent or others on the board for an explanation of the decision or what will happen to the bicycle money have been met with silence. DCBA was created when Andy Muzi bought out the Yellow Jersey Cooperative to create the Yellow Jersey bike shop. The long-time State Street shop closed recently and Muzi moved to Arlington, WI. Efforts to reach him were not successful. Payments by Muzi to the foundation created a fund which, over decades, provided grants to bicycle clubs and other groups mainly in the Dane County area. The grants totaled about $10,000-12,000 per year, depending on how much the invested funds earned in the previous year. It's unknown whether the funds will remain with bicycling or be diverted to other purposes. This information is provided in the hope a public discussion will introduce some sunshine.
