Actually, Dorothy, there are more than
just two issues here. This is primarily being
driven by WISDOT and the Verona Road
reconstruction. Opponents to giving General
Beverage additional parking space ignored the
fact GB lost 3 acres in the process of the
highway work. That's critical to their
operations. The WISDOT decision was largely
based on that. I feel as sorry as you do about
the negative impact on Madison Decorative
Stone, but what is clear is that this is an
extremely important link in the area bicycle
network and, despite the hard choices, needs to be completed ASAP.

To be clear, there are two separate issues.
The question about which side the spur back to
McKee Rd on the south side of the bridge should
be involved the two businesses. General
Beverage wants to build a roadway between the
bridge and their building, including parking
cars up against the west side of the bridge, so
they started a very contentious battle which is
having extremely negative impact on the other business.
The continuation of the path to the south is
purely General Beverages desire to have more
parking available and doesnt involve the other
business. So from the top of the bridge, bikers
will be looking down at vehicles parked where
the straight-line path should be, and the path
will have to go over and around wetlands to get
around them. Wetland permits have been a big holdup there.
I dont know how expensive it will be to make
all those changes to cater to General Beverage,
but Im not happy for the taxpayers of Fitchburg.

Work on the new Military Ridge
Trail/Cannonball Bike Path bridge over Highway
PD (McKee Road) in Fitchburg was held up due
to a dispute between adjacent landowners over
location of the south approach. Based on a
decision by the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation, the Fitchburg Planning
Commission recently approved a conditional use
permit for the project, but that generated a
threat of an appeal that would have further
delayed the project. That threat has now
vanished. Barring another unexpected
development, Fitchburg Mayor Shawn Pfaff says
the city now hopes the south end of the path
can be completed by September 22 and the north
end by October 20. Looks like we'll get to ride it this year after all.
