Paving of the approaches to the new bridge near Verona Road spanning Highway PD in Fitchburg and connecting the Cannonball path and Military Ridge State Trail will begin tomorrow, Friday, 10 October, construction workers on site said today. This ends the contentious debate that occurred between two adjacent businesses over which side of the bridge should be selected to build the off-ramp. The ramp to access bike lanes on PD is graded and going in on the east side. Still to be completed on this important link between Military Ridge and the other trails/paths meeting at the Fitchburg nexus is a tunnel. The tunnel will carry Cannonball riders under new Spoke and Sprocket Drives. (Is it not neat that Fitchburg has named these new streets, which will serve Saris and trucking companies by giving them access to PD, for bicycle components? Shows a commitment by city leaders.) Tunnel construction according to Mayor Shawn Pfaff and city engineering staff, could be completed by the end of this month, barring any delays due to weather or other complicating factors. The bottom line is that we should be riding this route over the new bridge yet this year.
