I remember someone insisting there would be “backups for miles” too. I don’t know who promised “a lot more business”, but it wasn’t me, and I find it hard to believe that any of the business owners would believe anyone who said that anyway. But as I said, I have been shunned and cut off by the business owners I approached when I offered to assist in that effort. I have biked to the UPS store on N Sherman a number of times – there is great bike parking there – good racks – unlike that wheel-bending fencepost rack out front of Trendsetters. I would think your group would be spreading the word to bikers to justify the change they sought. Maybe Satya would help you get in contact with bicyclists if you asked her. She did a good job of contacting them to make calls and support the TWLTL that they don’t use. We still have bikers using the route that goes by my home. I wonder if she ever bikes over to shop or dine. How many times have you and your friends biked over to shop or dine and spent some cash at one of our businesses? I didn’t know about the offer. What was your offer to them? I haven’t observed more bike usage.” There may be a self-inflicted wound that is preventing more bicycle business along N Sherman: I contacted the Northside Business Association President on several occasions, offering to coordinate volunteer efforts to distribute leaflets to homes in newly connected (via better bicycling infrastructure) neighborhoods on the near east side. The travel times to N Sherman businesses from near-east neighborhoods on designated bicycle facilities dropped from 45 minutes to 10 minutes as a result of the conversion, opening up a huge opportunity. East-side neighborhoods have some of the highest rates of bicycling in Madison. Despite this real opportunity, business owners I contacted shunned my offer and cut off communication. The report wasn’t complete and should be referred until all the information is in. Missing is the analysis of diverted traffic on the arterials especially Packers Avenue to E.Johnson & First Street. Also, an accurate bike count for the street and the sidewalk...many bicyclists are still using the sidewalks. I haven’t observed more bike usage. Success cannot be measured until all the information is in. It will take a few years to see if less traffic has hurt our business corridor and if the current customers that move on are replaced by new customers. The businesses have lost a lot of the drive by traffic they count on. Other then that N.
