=v= Buckley's opponent was John V. Lindsay, who actually
was a bicyclist, bicycle advocate, and, as mayor, a bike
commuter. Buckley was just showboating, as was his wont.

=v= Lindsay is more accurately described as a moderate.
His success as mayor was mixed, and in things where he
leaned conservative, e.g. battling unions, he did poorly.
Things where he leaned liberal went much better. He was
excluded from renomination by the Republicans for not
being "conservative enough," but was re-elected anyhow.

=v= He responded to a transit strike by advocating walking
and biking to work, telling everyone it was fun. Imagine
that kind of stance today, and trying to fit it into the
crampled little pigeonhole labels we now use for politics.
