I have forwarded this to Bike Fed, and I think they might be sending
someone, but am not sure. Hope so, because this is the type of local
project they should be involved in. Simple explanation of project from city
here: https://www.cityofmadison.com/engineering/projects/cottage-grove-road

To quote from a Facebook post two weeks ago:

Wow, just saw this proposed road section
<https://www.cityofmadison.com/sites/default/files/city-of-madison/engineering/documents/5992-09-26%20Preliminary%20Plan.pdf>
for Cottage Grove Rd from Thompson to Sprecher. Expanding to 4+ lanes for
cars with a 4' unbuffered bike lane (design speeds >40mph). What crud.

Open house scheduled:
October 8, 2015, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at
Madison East Police District Station - Community Room
809 S Thompson Drive, Madison WI

Today, same FB page:

Just a reminder that the public meeting for this project is on Thursday at
6:00. 4' unprotected bike lane is inappropriate for this reconstruct. Very
few parents will let their children ride in these lanes with 40+ mph car
traffic.

Why does it matter? From the middle of McClellan neighborhood you can get
to the following by bike (all via this stretch of Cottage Grove Road):
Elvejem School-9 minutes, Kennedy School-11 min, LaFollette-23 min, Rolling
Meadows Shopping Center-7 min, YMCA/Royster Clark dev.-13 min, Pinney
Library-14 min, Lake Edge Shopping Center-16 miin, Olbrich Park and
Gardens-19 min.

Or everyone can just drive their cars instead.
