What I love about that is that the choices are: walk or bike. Not even a hint that mom would drive.
Of course this was England in 1951, and folks were still recovering from WWII. Money was tight, and cars were not yet a daily transportation mode for most people. And most women didn't drive at all, even if the family owned a car.
