Unfortunately, sometimes there are conflicts for people interested in
improving bicycling in Madison. Tomorrow is one of those days.

1. The Cap times will hold one of their community discussions at 6:30 PM at
the High Noon. Topic: How can we make room for the bicycling boom?
Bring a question, or just come to enjoy the discussion. (Full disclosure: I
am a panelist.)

2. Annual PBMVC public hearing

what needs to be built to improve biking and walking. 5:30 PM in room 260
of the Madison Municipal Building. Know a place that needs some work? Come
say your piece, or email your suggestions to [email protected] by
July 8.

Regardless which event you pick, or if you aren't interested in attending
either, remember that *your voice is important!* You can email your alder
<http://www.cityofmadison.com/Council/>, the Mayor <[email protected]>,
or the alder in an area of the city that has a problem. Contact info for
elected officials can be on the city's website
<http://www.cityofmadison.com/>.

Also on the front page of the city website is Report a Problem
<http://www.cityofmadison.com/reportaproblem/>, where you can let the right
department know if there are specific issues that need to be addressed in
bike lanes, paths, crossings, etc. That form can be used if there are
branches down, potholes, lights not working, etc.

Even if you think someone else has emailed or called about improving
bicycling (or anything else), it's important that everyone voice their
concerns. If one person contacts his/her alder, that's one email. If five
people contact their alders, it starts to get attention. If 20 people
contact their alders and the mayor, it becomes a priority And if 20 people
a day contacted their elected officials..... [see final stanzas of Alice's

By the way, Madison Bikes <http://www.madisonbikes.org/> is also collecting
your concerns. But we are just a bunch of volunteers, so we need YOU to
speak up. And emailing us is not a substitute for contacting the city. (or
county, or state, or federal folks.)
