That file and libcrypto.a. As was mentioned in an earlier thread, you can 
try running configure like this:

CXXFLAGS="-L/usr/local/ssl/lib $CXXFLAGS" ./configure

True, and this info should go into the FAQ. The next release will have a 
configure option that lets you specify where the OpenSSL headers and libs 
are.
