Looking at some list archives the problems I have been having do seem to be related to Solaris, or certainly Solaris 2.9 at least. Other people running Solaris 9 have had the same problems. The libstdc++ problem I have resolved by putting an 'export LD_LIBRARY_PATH statement into the imap run script and changing the shebang to /bin/bash.
