So why not take a look at the actual files on the server, and see if you
can't spot any differences?

Did a test to show what's going on .. (lacking a real purpose)
I there where anything "special" with the folders I shouldnt be able delete and re-create them, and if thunderbird / mozilla is caching something in some way, I should'nt be able to delete the account.

Seems to be several bug reports on similar issues in the mozilla bugtraq, Ill try a nightly build.

Created a testfolder: cd ~/IMAPdir mkdir -p yat/tmp yat/cur yat/new

Thunderbird : OK
Mozilla 1.7b: OK

Crated a subfoler: mkdir -p yat.sub/tmp yat.sub/cur yat.sub/new

Thunderbird: Does not show, "no matter what" (subscribe, unsubscribe, restart ..)
Mozilla : Same

Created a new subfolder to 'yat' in Thunderbird: sub-tb
Thunderbird: OK, I can now subscribe to 'sub' too ..
Mozilla : Can subscribe to the subfolders, but they do not show in the folders list. After a unsubscribe - subscribe, they disappear altogether.
Thunderbird: Now the subfolders are gone from TB too ..

Created a new subfolder in Mozilla: sub-moz

Mozilla : OK, they all show now.
Thunderbird: Same

Deleted 'yat' and re-created it: rm -r yat mkdir -p yat/tmp yat/cur yat/new

Thunderbird: OK, no change.
Mozilla : 'sub' disappeared from the folder-list. Still in the 'subscribe' list though, unsubscribe-subscribe brings it back.

Deleted 'yat' and its subfolders:
Thunderbird: Still in the folder-list, gone from the subscribe-list. After a restart they get grayed out in the folder-list
Mozilla : Gone from the folder-list, grayed out in the subscribe list

Recreated 'yat' and its subfolders: mkdir -p yat/tmp yat/cur yat/new mkdir -p yat.sub/tmp yat.sub/cur yat.sub/new mkdir -p yat.sub-tb/tmp yat.sub-tb/cur yat.sub-tb/new mkdir -p yat.sub-moz/tmp yat.sub-moz/cur yat.sub-moz/new

Thunderbird: Still grayed out, but in the subscribe-list. A restart brings them back.
Mozilla : yat appears without subfolders. The subscribe-list shows the subfolders too .. A restart removes the subfolders from the subscribe-list too, cant get them back. Thunderbird: Subfolders are gone here too ..

Created yat2 rm -r yat* mkdir -p yat2/new yat2/cur yat2/tmp

In thunderbird, subscribed to yat2, and created the subfolder 'tb'.
Mozilla: yat2 is in the folderlist but not 'tb'. Both are in the subscribe-list though ..
Created a new subfolder in mozilla, 'moz'
Mozilla: ok, both subfolders.
Thunderbird: same

Deleted yat2 and the subfolders, re-created them before launching tb and mozilla:
rm -r yat2*
mkdir -p yat2/cur yat2/new yat2/tmp
mkdir -p yat2.moz/cur yat2.moz/new yat2.moz/tmp
mkdir -p yat2.tb/cur yat2.tb/new yat2.tb/tmp

Thunderbird: OK, still there ..
Mozilla : Same ..

Deleted the account in TB Deleted yat2 and the subfolders, and re-created them, made a new account:

Thunderbird: OK, still there
Mozilla : OK
