I don't mean to sidetrack at all, but have you looked into qmail-spp?
That, coupled with the smtpauth patch make a very pluggable system. I'm
in the process of writing documentation on my experiences with it if
you're interested. It's far from completed, but still useful. You can

indeed... most MUAs have auto provision for setting pop before smtp..
However, I have never had a complaint from any user, on any server to
date with my method... ( <g>... well trained users)..
