I don't mean to sidetrack at all, but have you looked into qmail-spp? That, coupled with the smtpauth patch make a very pluggable system. indeed... most MUAs have auto provision for setting pop before smtp..
However, I have never had a complaint from any user, on any server to
date with my method... ( <g>... well trained users)..


Wow.. can I have some of those users?  :)
