There are much worse consequences than receiving a confimation email, like
having your address blocked completely. I think it's quite a good method,
especially for someone in his position. It seems quite reasonable for the
author of open source software, who is going to have his address many
places on the internet, and receive many emails from many people who will
most likely solve their initial problem before he even replies, to at least
confirm the importance of their email to the projects address.

Why not? It would have taken much less time than subscribing to the list.
And you don't seem to be concerned with how many people you are
broadcasting this email to... hundreds... perhaps thousands. And you are
worried about the two you got? =)

I don't really care either way, not trying to pry my nose into your
business, it's just that the author is genuinely helpful, and has quickly
responded to emails I have sent, and I have appreciated it greatly. I
think his system allows him to do this, so I think he deserves a little
defense on the issue.
