If you have a backup of the zone file from not too long ago (maybe a copy on a slave server?), then that plus the journal file could be enough to get all the data back. The journal will usually contain records of many updates, typically back to your last "rndc freeze". As long as you have a zone file that has a serial number recorded in the journal file, it'll be able to start from there and bring the file up to date.
