Hi,

To be honest, I’m a bit skeptical that you’ll be able to cram this in such a
short time frame. That being said, I do wish you good luck.

When learning how DNS works, I’ve found it most useful to deploy it in my home
network — specifically ISC’s products because they (especially BIND) are the de
facto industry standard. Being fairly easy to use (as far as server software
goes), and being not very resource-intensive, makes it perfect for a home lab.
And because so many organizations are using BIND, you can then extend from
there. Some concepts you may not need at home, but may need at a business,
include things like DNSSEC and zone transfers across networks. On that last
one, questions about IP address authentication vs. TSIG authentication come to
mind.

You may find resources such as Zytrax useful, I find them complementary to
ISC’s own documentation and have commented them in from time to time into my
config files. That being said, my path was full of just trial and error. See
what works, use it for a while, re-evaluate. If ingenuity rather than
memorization is what this company is after, this is the angle I’d want to
approach it from.

Met vriendelijke groet,
Michael De Roover
